Woman Charged Over Sydney School Crash Deaths Says She Is “Deeply Sorry”

The driver of the car which crashed into a classroom in Sydney‘s southwest, killing two eight-year-old boys, says she is “deeply sorry,” according to a statement through her lawyer.

Maha Al-Shennag, 52, a mother of four, has been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving, after her Toyota Kluger veered off the road and crashed into the classroom at Banksia Road Public School in Greenacre.

Two boys were pronounced dead after being taken to hospital in a critical condition after the crash. Three girls, two aged eight and one aged nine, were also taken to hospital, but are now in a stable condition.

A post on the Facebook page of Hanna Legal, who are representing Ms Al-Shennagsaid that she is “deeply sorry for the loss and hurt suffered by the children, the school, the families and the community,” and that her “thoughts and prayers are with those affected.”

Police are not treating the crash as intentional, and Ms Al-Shennag is cooperating with the investigation. It’s currently unknown what caused the vehicle to leave the road and crash into the classroom.

Ms Al-Shennag has been granted conditional bail and will appear at Bankstown Local Court on November 29.
