John Oliver Compares Kicking Tony Abbott To Kicking Heroin

Following John Oliver‘s whistlestop tour of Australia, which happened to coincide with one of the most politically ripe periods a prominent comedian with a weekly politics-based satirical magazine TV show could ever hope to encounter, just about everyone with even a passing interest in Last Week Tonight has been hoping – pleading – for another Oliver lampooning of (now former) Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

And in the wake of the dusting off of the ceremonial boot, Oliver obliged on the red carpet of today’s Emmy Awards.
Speaking with Studio 10, Oliver poured one out for our dear departed Tone, before dropping a severely under-appreciated quip (at least as far as the show’s studio audience goes).
I don’t know what the point of Tony Abbott was, but it was fun while it lasted. It was like taking heroin – it was incredibly exhilarating, but it was right that you stopped.”

Also of note is his response to the comedic possibilities of Donald Trump possibly making it to a Presidential election. Which he does not want to see, because “I’m a human being as well, and I don’t really want to deal with the human consequences of that.
Memo to LWT staff: Just because he’s not in office anymore, doesn’t mean you still can’t do a thing on Abbott’s onion-eating.
It’s never too late for that.
