Dog Meme Account Forced To Say Soz For Its Response To Trump’s ‘Covfefe’ Tweet

A dog appreciation Twitter account is at the centre of a huge online controversy after it tried to flog hats with a misspelt tweet from the President of the United States on them, and if that isn’t a huge indication of the insane weirdness of 2017 then I don’t know what is.

WeRateDogs,
a Twitter account with well over two million followers, took a break from its usual good posting of dogs to jump on the ‘covfefe‘ bandwagon (in reference to a misspelt Trump tweet) that basically melted Twitter for a good six hours yesterday

The 20-year-old who runs the account, Matt Nelson, saw an opportunity to further jump on the covfefe thing, and quickly made a ‘Covfefe AF‘ hat for his merchandise shop.

The whole stunt was intensely lame – the meme was already dead 20 minutes after Trump accidentally hit ‘tweet’ while passing out on the toilet – but it wasn’t offensive.

But then Nelson decided to donate all proceeds from the hat to Planned Parenthood, and people just got so incredibly mad.

He’s now posted a THREE SCREENSHOT MESSAGE apologising for the whole damn mess.

“If my actions offended you, I’m sincerely sorry,” he wrote. “Alienating a portion of my audience is stupid and unnecessary. Different opinions are good and conversations about those opinions are valuable. Dogs are bipartisan and that’s why my following is diverse and my account brings people together. Last night I jeopardised that, and I’m sorry. I’ll do my best to put the train back on the tracks to the wholesome, pure, escape from reality account you have all come to love.

WeRateDogs is now back to rating dogs.
