One Woman Dead, Man Hospitalised After Dog Mauling In Canberra Overnight

A woman has died as a result of a dog attack in Canberra this morning, and one man has been hospitalised.

Police were called to the suburb of Watson at 3.40am after receiving reports that a dog had attacked two people. While attempting to help the woman, police officers were also attacked by the dog and it was shot dead.

“Whilst attempting to provide a first aid response to the female victim, the dog attacked police at which point officers were forced to draw their firearms and euthanise the animal,” the police said in a statement. “ACT Ambulance Service attended the scene and a male victim was conveyed to hospital.”

The woman has now been identified as aged in her 40s and living in the home where the attack occurred. It’s believed the man was a visitor. The dog breed has not yet been confirmed by the police.

AFP Forensic Services and ACT Policing Criminal Investigations are investigating the incident, and ACT Health is yet to report on the man’s condition.
