Citing Victoria Police, the ABC reports the deer attacked the couple around 8:20am as they walked on their Moyhu property, some 25 kilometres south of Wangaratta.

Paramedics were called after the attack. Sadly, the man died at the scene.

The woman, who sustained severe injuries to her legs and upper body, was airlifted to Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital in a serious condition.

The deer was killed by police officers. The type of deer involved in the incident is not yet known.

The state’s feral deer population is thought to have increased dramatically in recent years.

Last year, it was estimated that Victoria was home to more than one million feral deer, prompting Victorian National Parks Association spokesperson Philip Ingamells to tell The Age “deer are just giant hoofed cane toads… and they’re poised to take over the nation.”

Investigations into today’s incident are ongoing.
