You Can Pay $39 To Have Some Hobart Teens Show You Round Dark Mofo, But Also: Why Would You?

Dark Mofo has done it again, and have unveiled a strange new program called Nightwalks with Teenagers to tickle your fancy and it’a already caused quite a stir.

Each year, Dark Mofo celebrates the darkness of the southern winter solstice (longest night of the year) featuring musical acts, art installations and programs like the Nightwalk.

It’s unclear what exactly the Nightwalk will involve, but it involves teenagers guiding you around Hobart, and $39 dollarydoos of your hard-earned money. For $39, I really hope the teenagers break out into dance…actually on second thought…no.

“Roam through Hobart’s nocturnal landscape with local teens as your guide. Grounded by the power of walking together, this is an unexpected, intergenerational tour of our town, where anything can happen,” the description on the event reads.

However, some people have already pointed out how insane this event sounds and yes, they do have a point.

“I love everything about the strong Fyre Festival energy here. It’s 18+! It costs $39! It’s just wandering around town at night,” @ordinarytanya wrote.

“Absolute lol when it turns out the teenagers are all theatre nerds and the audience is trapped on some horrible theatre sports ghost tour,” @AngeMaryClaire wrote.

Others are worried they might just get mugged by theatre nerds.

Let’s hope Dark Mofo use teenagers whose idea of fun doesn’t involve harmonising or improv. If they do, there is potential for the walk to be genuinely interesting. Imagine walking around Hobart with an eshay, who tells you the best spots to buy bags and steal someone’s TNs. I love it!

The event is run by Canadian theatre group Mammalian Diving Reflex, who create “site and social-specific performance events, theatre productions, participatory gallery installations” etc. Their aim is to bring people together in new and unusual ways.

The Dark Mofo event will run from Thursday 17 until Sunday 20 June, 7–9.30pm (doors 6.45pm). Tickets will be available in late may, which you can purchase here.
