Man Hospitalised With Potential Brain Injury After Huge Chapel Street Brawl

Police are searching for the culprits of a brawl that took place in a popular Melbourne nightlife district this morning, after a man was left unconscious and sprawled over tram tracks for half an hour.

The 30-year-old victim was taken to the Alfred hospital with serious head injuries after the incident on Chapel Street in Prahran. The man is in a stable condition, but doctors are reportedly concerned the man has suffered brain damage as a result of the attack.

Two other 29-year-old men were also admitted to the Alfred for treatment.

The incident occurred when an altercation outside a club moved onto the street at around 1am this morning. Detectives said as many as 20 people were involved in the “brutal and vicious” fight near the intersection of High Street and Chapel Street. Authorities are looking for 10 specific offenders.

Prahran acting Detective Sergeant Katie Johnston said it was unclear what instigated the fight, and that “victims are co-operating at this point but unfortunately they don’t remember much as two were knocked unconscious and one has got minor memories in the lead up to the brawl occurring.”

“It’s extremely vicious and it’s unfortunate you get particular males who decide to go out and spoil it for the rest of us,” Sergeant Johnston said.

Police are investigating CCTV footage which appears to show some of the offenders on nearby Greville Street after the fight.

Anyone with information has been urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
