Pond Cover Fremantle Dockers Theme Song, Save It From Being The Worst Thing Ever

Pond and Pavlich, what more could you want? Pond, noted supporters of the Fremantle Dockers, celebrate their team’s impressive 2-0 start to the season (including a first round derby win against bitter rivals West Coast) with a dark and stormy cover of the most maligned theme song in the AFL, “Freo Heave Ho”. The song was uploaded to the Soundcloud account of Pond/Tame Impala member Jay Watson who also shared it on Facebook under the caption “FUTURE PREMIERS” (keep a lid on it, mate).

As triple j notes, Watson isn’t the only member of Pond/Tame Impala who bleeds purple with bandmate Nick Allbrook wearing a Freo scarf during a live performance of “Elephant” on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon this year. In 2011, former number one ticket holders Eskimo Joe submitted a less laughable replacement for the universally derided doom bogan theme song (let your ears bleed here), but were ignored in favour of rejigging the original.

Pond/Tame Impala are also closely linked with Oklahoma City weirdos The Flaming Lips who may have inspired the cover when they turned cathartic Soft Bulletin opener “Race for the Prize” into a championship related theme song for their local NBA team, the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Listen to Pond’s take on “Freo Heave Ho” below.

And go the Purple Haze. This group has improved significantly under Ross Lyon, who is definitely a weirdo.
