M.I.A Documentary Director Leaks Trailer, “Would Rather Die” Than Finish It

Poor M.I.A—she of #trufflegate fame—hasn’t bee having the best time, lately. According to Rolling Stone, M.I.A’s upcoming album, Matangi has been halted for being “too positive’—because, obviously, M.I.A is only allowed to be a bad girl who lives fast, dies young. And now drama has flooded the Sri Lankan born singer again, as the director for a documentary about M.I.A leaked its trailer, and then called quits on the unfinished project: saying he’d rather be dead than attempt to resuscitate its progress.

British director Steve Loveridge has been working on the M.I.A documentary for over a year in collaboration with the American entertainment company Roc Nation and M.I.A’s record label, Interscope. However, Loveridge was disheartened and frustrated by the jarred progress of the documentary, as he posted on his tumblr account: “I get an email every few weeks from Roc Nation or Interscope saying it’s all going to start up again, but then nothing.”

After leaking the teaser trailer on the same tumblr account on July 7, an associate from Roc Nation scolded Loverige via email for releasing an unsolicited copy of the trailer, saying it “screws with everything we’ve been working on”. Loveridge responded to Roc Nation with a fiery burn, adding a trolling, patronising smiley face to flourish his pièce de résistance: “I really couldn’t give a flying fuck. Count me out. Would rather die than work on this . . . nothing personal 🙂“.

See? “Nothing personal”. He’d just rather be dead than have to work with you, Roc Nation. No offense.

M.I.A is clearly distressed that the feature film dedicated to to her very existence is in peril, and has taken to twitter to garner support for the documentary to continue.

You can watch the teaser trailer below, featuring appearances from Spike Jonze, Kanye West and Diplo.
