Kimbra’s Couturier To Crowd-Fund Her Way From Perth To Paris

More of more we’re seeing evidence of the power of crowd-funding. Today a record was broken when a campaign to fund a Veronica Mars movie raised $2 million in less than nine hours via the crowd-funding platform Kickstarter. Similar success has been achieved by ukelele-toting crowd-funding advocate Amanda Palmer, and Australian indie musician/actor Brendan Maclean who, via a social media-driven Pozible campaign, exceeded his target goal of $17,500 by more than six grand.

Jaime Lee Major is the designer responsible for keeping Grammy-winning pop charmer, Kimbra, ensconced in a technicoloured cocoon of tulle, sequins and ruffles. It’s highly detailed, theatrical demi-couture worthy of a Torvill and Dean ‘golden moments’ DVD special. When we chatted with Jaime Lee back in March 2012 she explained that, while having Kimbra act as a living advertisement has been great for exposure to a point, showing at Paris Fashion Week would give her designs a platform where another type of customer (A-list celebrities, International editors, rich people and fashion buyers) could discover them.

Jaime Lee told us she’s had a lot of attention “but it’s mostly from young girls that want to buy a dress they’ve seen Kimbra wear. The amount of emails I got after the ARIAs was insane. Little did they realise the lilac dress Kimbra wore used 40 metres of silk and took four months to make.”

As we all know, high school teenagers are shit with money and can hardly be relied on to provide a steady flow of requests for extremely expensive customised fashions. This is why Jaime Lee has started a Pozible campaign with the goal to present a 30 piece collection at Paris Fashion Week in July 2013. For more information check her Pozible campaign page.
