Shoshanna from Girls Won’t Reach the $32K Kickstarter Goal For Her Band

When she’s not playing Shoshanna on the sex cauldron of a show, Girls, Zosia Mamet keeps busy playing in a folk band with her half-sister Clara and struggles to make ends meet being the daughter of esteemed playwright, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and Oscar nominee, David Mamet.

Their band, called Cabin Sisters, has gone down the relatively orthodox path of celebrity crowd funding. On Kickstarter four days ago, they nominated a goal of $32,000 to produce a video for their song “Bleak Love”, and in that time have accrued just $1,389 across 37 pledges.

Dire beginnings indeed with only ten days remaining, and comparatively, when we consider that Zach Braff recently pulled a whopping $3.1 million in just a month using the same platform. Braff’s approach was the subject of much speculation, though, despite him exceeding his $2 million goal by more than fifty percent— obvious criticisms being directed at his prominent status and questionable ability to fund the project himself.

A few more things to consider here:

1. Us regular people are going to be skeptical of any person of high-profile status asking for ca$h from us regular people
2. Zach Braff had a much larger goal, and accordingly used a few different avenues to pull the dollars: crowd funding, his own pocket and most recently, as a result of the Kickstarter project, extra support from a traditional film financier.
3. Are today’s savvy, dynamically attention-shifting audiences tired of the Kickstarter thing already? Was this instance just the straw that broke the camel’s back or….
4. …does the up-and-coming folk band Cabin Sisters just suck tremendously?
5. Melissa Joan Hart reached only $51,605 of the $2 million she was aiming for to fund a film in a similar vein to her 1999 rom-com “Drive Me Crazy,” which was, lol,  her last lead role. Though she retracted her project prematurely because of low engagement, who the fuck is giving it up for this shit?
