Julian Casablancas Thrills Fans At Australian Shows

Julian Casablancas, the object of infatuation for several Pedestrian staff members, wrapped up his brief solo tour last night in Sydney – his third consecutive night on stage, after shows in Brisbane and Melbourne. According to all reports, The Strokes’ dreamy front man gave a magnetic, relaxed performance and sounded incredible. Pedestrian’s co-director and Casablancas bromantic, Chris Wirasinha, was at The Metro last night and gave us the wrap on a great show…

“First and foremost, the night was a reminder of Julian Casablancas’ ability to write an amazing pop/soul song. His solo record really filled out live and offered a lot more drive and energy than the recording. When the band started playing the first Strokes song of the night – I actually (against the roars of the crowd) found myself saying you don’t even have to do this.

“It was the first time I’d ever heard a Strokes songs performed while Casablancas was not totally inebriated and it was a wonderful thing. Strokes shows for me were synonymous with drunken charm, slurring, incoherent between-song babble and even Julian forgetting lyrics mid-song. When he sang “Hard to Explain” and “The Modern Age” last night it really captured the essence of what made Is This It such a powerful record.

“It was strange not having the rest of the Strokes onstage with him, but it did raise a slight smile when I knew that even if the band splits (which, given their move from a gang mentality to a group of individuals that can’t be in the same room together, seems on the cards) there’ll still be the opportunity to hear the songs that I love Live: Every Tuesday to Sunday in The Julian Casablancas/Strokes Las Vegas Spectacular! at the Palms in 30 years time.”
