Boston Declares Tomorrow To Be ‘Riot Grrrl Day’ In Honour Of Kathleen Hanna

In the media game, sometimes you get news items that cross your desk that make pique your interest a little bit. Sometimes you get news items that you know will do reasonably well with you, the audience. And then sometimes you get news items like this one where I can confidently assert to you all that it is absolutely, unequivocally, without a shadow of a doubt cool as shit.

The City of Boston and its Mayor Marty Walsh has declared tomorrow to be Riot Grrrl Day in honour of Kathleen Hanna, legendary frontwoman of genre-smashing feminist groups Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and currently The Julie Ruin, leading force in the Riot Grrrl movement of the 90s, and general, all-around, fierce badass.
Mayor Walsh cited Hanna’s own Riot Grrrl manifesto first published in 1991 in issuing an official decree for the day.
In part, the excellent decree reads as such.
“The riot grrrl philosophy has never felt more relevant, with misogyny still rampant in many cultural spheres. Riot grrls redefine the language used against them and continue to fight the newest incarnations of the patriarchy. In doing so, they ironically confirm one ex-congressman’s accidental wisdom: ‘the female body has ways to shut that down.’ It sure does: women’s voices telling their stories can shut that down.

The decree was announced to coincide with Hanna’s visit to Boston to lecture and perform with The Julie Ruin at Boston’s Wilbur Theatre. In a really neat little quirk of fate, it’ll be Boston’s Chief of Policy Joyce Linehan who will formally introduce Hanna before the decree is presented to her. As it turns out, Linehan and Hanna have known each other for 20-odd years, and Linehan herself used to work as a promotor and manager at Sub Pop Records during the era of Bikini Kill. Mad!

The full proclamation is below, and it is thoroughly awesome.
Kathleen Hanna was the subject of the astonishingly good 2013 documentary The Punk Singer, and continues to sporadically perform with The Julie Ruin.
Way to go, Boston. Absolutely smashing it.
