Bloc Party – Mercury

As we reported yesterday, British four-piece Bloc Party left a cryptic count down on their website www.blocparty.com. When the timer reached zero a radio plug was revealed for Zane Lowe’s show broadcast on BBC Radio 1. Lowe then debuted a brand new Bloc Party track on air entitled “Mercury” and spoke to frontman Kele Okereke…

My one listen verdict leads me to believe that this is a remixed Bloc Party track. The glitched out vocal treatment is a slight departure from their usual sound, but is a logical progression from the effects they were exploring on their sophomore effort. The tight rhythm section is still there, but it is the vocal refrain you won’t be able to get out of your head. Kele shed some light on the new track: “It’s a song we finished a little while ago that we’re really proud of so we thought we’d let everyone hear it. I’m still somewhat in awe.” The film clip explores some Planet of the Apes type scenario with quasi-political undertones and I’m a bit confused by what any of it actually means…

Okereke also spoke about their third album (produced by by Paul Epworth and Jacknife Lee), he revealed that:”I think we’re making the record I always wanted us to make. We’re kind of just in the middle of it, we’re still writing songs and mixing stuff.”
