Black Lips & Mark Ronson Not Such An Odd Pairing

Does it strike you as strange that one of the main bulwarks of the Vice Records stable Black Lips have enlisted bespoke suit adorned soul-revivalist Mark Ronson to produce their sixth studio album? Initially we were bracing for an uber-polished and chastened re-imagining of a band as famous for shilling loogies as they are for lo-fi surf rock; – which seemed a shame, for as talented as Mark Ronson is, his trademark brass fanfares and the Atlanta band’s sloppy guitar hooks seemed pretty fucking random.

To the relief of Black Lips fans Ronson is “not going to go in there and clean up the Black Lips and their lo-fi garageness”, as he explains to Rolling Stone in the exclusive footage below. The album has a tentative release date for January 2011 and cover art will feature a skull which vocalist Cole Alexander acquired in New York. He told NME that he hopes the album “will be our most fucked-up but successful album” and with Ronson at the helm it probably will.

PS Does anyone else find it totally bizarre that Mark Ronson has an English accent while his sister Samantha Ronson has an American accent? Just sayin.
