Chef, surfer, almond activator and newly-minted sunscreen truther Pete Evans has responded to the media hubbub around his recent claims that regular ol’ UV blocking remedies are little more than toxic garbage.
In a post on his Instagram account, Evans labelled the press “funk’n sneaky” for allegedly misinterpreting his decidedly straightforward public comments, before thanking the same media for spreading his quackery:
“Nope, I’m not hiding from the Sun, I’m respecting it, by not staying out long enough to burn and yup I’m wearing a non toxic sunscreen specifically for surfing too! Thanks you funk’n sneaky media & all you misinformed people trying to twist the story to create fear and drama, because in actual fact you’ve spread the good message further…Read labels folks, learn about what’s in your food, what’s in your sunscreen, your skincare, your haircare, your water and most importantly, please wise up as to what you’re putting on or into your precious children! At the end of the day I’m just a passionate family man trying to do my best by my family and I’m openly sharing our journey!”
Mild sunburn, of course, is something supermarket sunscreen has been proven time and time again to negate – regardless of its “poisonous” (but not rly) contents.
TL;DR nobody is encouraging consumers to avoid researching the composition of the products they use, but when a public figure uses their stature to spread info that could be flat-out harmful, the media has gotta keep that in check.
