There’s been a lot of rampant speculation in the media – half-jokingly, half-not – that The Rock himself should run for President in 2020. It’d be dispensing with the illusion that the American political process is even remotely about anything other than being the world’s biggest wrestling match, but maybe that’s liberating.
So, after all that consideration, Johnson doesn’t hesitate when I ask him whether he honestly might one day give up his life as the highest-paid movie star on earth—which is unquestionably easier, more fun, and more lucrative than being president of the United States—in order to run for office. “I think that it’s a real possibility,” he says solemnly.
Well, now he’s done it. Maybe. It was on Saturday Night Live, after all. But he went right ahead and announced a 2020 presidential run, with an intoxicating choice for vice president: Tom Hanks. It’s like a presidential ticket designed in a lab to make the most people possible say “What could possibly go wrong?”
