Until now, Sherlock has been able to skirt by on a layer of goofiness: sure, Benedict Cumberbatch‘s interpretation of the detective borders on sociopathic, but my God, is he a fun sociopath. Martin Freeman‘s John Watson is confronted by memories of his tumultuous military service, but there’s always been just enough of that innocent, affable Freeman-ity to offset the real turmoil.
In the new teaser for the BBC juggernaut’s fourth series, that joviality has been discarded like so many nicotine patches.
Season 3 spoilers ahoy, but the reappearance of Moriarty via those staticy / spooky outbursts seems to have done a number on the Holmes boys, and even Mrs Hudson seems on edge. You know things have gone to shit when the woman who is a-okay with you keeping dismembered bodily bits in her fridge is scowling around the joint.
The teaser also heralds the arrival of the A+ Toby Jones as the season’s big bad. If he’s even half as menacing as S3’s Lars Mikkelsen, y’all are in for a bloody grand time.
