Trailer: Matthew McConaughey Garners Early Oscars Buzz For Role As HIV Patient

Early Oscars buzz is surrounding the release of the first trailer for “Dallas Buyers Club”, the “inspired by true events” biopic starring a startlingly skinny Matthew McConaughey.

McConaughey plays Ron Woodroof, a Texan “Cowboy, Gambler, Hellraiser”, who is diagnosed with HIV in the mid 1980’s. In the search for alternative treatments for his condition, he begins smuggling unregulated HIV drugs across the border from Mexico which are “better’n what you can get in the States”, distributing them to other patients and coming head to head with the Food and Drug Administration in the process. McConaughey lost what’s known in Hollywood as a “shit tonne” of weight for the role, ensuring this is one of those movies he makes more and more of these days where he forgets to take his shirt off.

The film also stars Jennifer Garner as Woodroof’s doctor, a barely recognisable Jared Leto as a transsexual prostitute (who’s performance is also Jennifer garnering talk of an Oscar), and Bradford Cox, singer/guitarist for indie rock band Deerhunter, in a supporting role. It premieres at the Toronto Film Festival in September.
