Oh, Tracey Jewel. A vast pantheon of sorry souls have turned to Married At First Sight for a potential life partner, but very few have copped as much shit as Tracey.
Matched with Dean Wells, a bloke whose Cro-Magnon take on relationships copped heat before the first episode, Tracey has dealt with his duplicitous bullshit for much of the season – and just about received whiplash last night when he admitted to a spat of infidelity.
In last night’s episode, Tracey somehow agreed to stay with the bloke, despite his admission of secret meetings with fellow contestant Davina Rankin. That sparked a curious mix of anger and pity among the nation’s many armchair therapists, but an admission from Tracey this morning makes the whole saga somehow even more goddamn tragic.
Speaking to Nova’s Chrissie, Sam and Browny this morning, Tracey reiterated the fact she couldn’t make the call to leave on the spot.
As for what could possibly have kept her from ditching the experiment… Well. It seems she’s really, totally, hopelessly invested in the show’s premise of “scientifically” matching contestants with the loves of their lives.
“I was just relying on the experts matching me with someone that was supposed to be perfect for me,” Tracey said. “And I’ve invested a lot to be there, you know – time away from my daughter, time away from work. And I just couldn’t make a decision then and there on the couch.”
There you go, Australia. Instead of watching a group of people savvy to the obviously bullshit pretence of the ‘experiment’, we could actually be watching someone with a sincere belief the producers paired her with her be-all and end-all, instead of just another gronk.
In a subsequent Instagram post, she added “There’s no right or wrong to stay or to go and at this point of the experiment I’ve chosen to stay. I’d rather regret staying than regret walking away too soon.”
Bloody hell. Watch this space for when the last of her hope is finally, brutally extinguished.
