I just watched the trailer for The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, not to be confused with Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium though both exploit our new found desire for whimsy and both instantly fall into the category “film titles journalists hate typing and hence turn into acronyms”. But I digress. Where was I? Oh yeah – I just watched the eagerly anticipated trailer for “TIODP” and you know that sinking feeling you get when a much hyped film falls short of expectations due to a lackluster trailer? Yep you guessed it, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus does the opposite.
It looks freakin’ amazing and exceeds astronomical expectations. It’s multi-layered, cerebral, visually breath-taking and finds that tenuous balance between childlike fantasy and creepy supernatural darkness. But what more would you expect from the auteur who birthed Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas and The Brothers Grimm? And oh how the internet loves it. Between a Tom Waits cameo (as the devil no less) for the music blogs, a Lily Cole cameo for the fashion blogs, Heath Ledger’s sole posthumous role for everyone else and the “dreamboat triumvirate” (girlfriend’s words not mine) of Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell – The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a Publicist’s wet dream. Finding an “angle” hasn’t been this easy since Chloe Sevingy went down on Vincent Gallo. Shit, the press release would write itself.
