Did Tom Waits Inform Heath Ledger’s The Joker?

And speaking of viral subject matter … this Tom Waits interview from 1979 is making the rounds because of the similarities between the American songwriting legend and Heath Ledger‘s immortalising performance of The Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight.

When you compare the interview footage of Waits with clips of Ledger in the movie the likeness is pretty uncanny – from the posture and perpetually amused demeanour, to the mannerisms and the gravelly tear and timbre of their voices – especially the voice. Soon after the The Dark Knight shoot wrapped, Ledger and Waits acted together in Terry Gilliam’s movie The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, which adds even more to the retrospective head fuckishness.
