Seven’s New Ratings Grab Is A BBQ Contest, With MKR’s Texan Rob As Judge

No Aussie summer is complete without barbecues, long days on the piss and jellyfish attacks, but a drinking-based reality show would draw complaints, and Manu Feildel is probably wary of being dunked in a tank full of angry sea creatures, so Seven are betting on BBQ.

Restaurant Revolution died a sad and obscure death earlier this year when put up against Nine‘s The Hotplate, but the network are bravely trying again, with a brand new, cooking-based competition called Aussie Barbecue Heroes.

Because My Kitchen Rules is still a massive hit, and the Texas BBQ craze is showing few signs of fading away, Seven have combined the two, hiring MKR favourite, bushy moustache-haver and real-live Texan Robert Murphy to judge and dish out livestock-based anecdotes.
Joining him are Ben’s Meat Bible and Ben’s BBQ Bible author Ben O’Donoghue and barbecue expert Jess Pryles. In addition to judging, O’Donoghue will also play host on the series.
The series will feature nine teams of two, which, if MKR is a good indicator (and you know it is), will include suburban mums, rich bitches, rough-and-tumble best mates and at least one shit couple who bicker constantly and undermine everyone.

The teams will compete for $100,000 in prize money as they grill up on beaches, in caravan parks and … other sunny spots yet to be determined. Says O’Donoghue:
“I am excited to be part of a team that will unearth some of Australia’s hottest barbecuing talent.
I can’t wait to see them fire up the burners. This competition isn’t about throwing some snags on the grill; the contestants will need to display true culinary and creativity skills.”
Aussie Barbecue Heroes is coming soon to Seven.
