The characters that shot Kylie Minogue into perpetual international stardom and Jason Donovan into slightly more domestic and definitely less perpetual stardom, and the participants in 80’s television’s most important wedding (ie. Scott and Charlene on Neighbours, obvs) have proved to be more enduring than we ever thought possible. While a return to Ramsay St by Kylie Minogue could just be the thing that reignites Australia’s love affair with homegrown free-to-air television sitcoms, it probably (definitely) ain’t gonna happen. Instead, the people who make Neighbours might just be arranging what they reckon is the next best thing.
Apparently the lineage of Scott and Charlene doesn’t end with Scott and Charlene. At some point after their departure from Ramsay St, the couple had a baby boy. He was never seen on screen but was presumably born with a glorious flowing mullet, and now, after two decades, little Daniel Robinson is coming back to where it all began. Neighbours casting directors are reportedly looking for a “Liam Hemsworth type” (why not just go for Liam Hemsworth himself? Reach for the stars, people), and series producer Jason Herbison said “Charlene and Scott are the quintessential love story who have the happy ending. More than 25 years on, they are still remembered worldwide. It is fantastic that we can re-open this chapter of Neighbours‘ history for a new generation of viewers.”
