If I Have To Look At Matthew Morrison In Full Grinch Makeup For A New Musical Then So Do You

Matthew Morrison / The Grinch

I woke up this morning in a positively delightful mood. It’s Friday. FRIDAY! Nothing could ruin my day, until I saw Matthew Morrison as the Grinch for NBC’s musical special. Honestly, what the fuck?

NBC unveiled its first look at Morrison playing the beloved Dr. Seuss character during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday. It is certainly SOMETHING ELSE.

The Glee star is in full Grinch makeup and costume.

Before I saw the teaser, I thought that Morrison’s Grinch might look a little something like Jim Carrey‘s beloved character from How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

I was quite wrong.

As my colleague Louie Costello said this morning: “Who would’ve thought a 15-second teaser could ruin my entire life.”

I couldn’t tell you what NBC was trying to achieve with this teaser. If it was an outpouring of praise for Morrison as the Grinch, I’m sorry to say it had the absolute opposite effect.

Twitter has thoughts, and none of them are good.

Good God, he looks so cursed.

Why? Just why?

Not all viewers felt personally attacked by Morrison’s Grinch, though.

Check out this bloke, who just bloody lost it.

The musical, a two-hour production, features the hit songs You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch and Welcome Christmas.

It costars Denis O’Hare (American Horror Story) as Max and newcomer Amelia Minto as Cindy-Lou Who.

Morrison himself described the new production as “a unique version” of the seasonal favourite.

“My wish is to bring some Who-ville magic to this holiday season,” he said. “While the pandemic presents some challenges in bringing a stage production to life, we are excited to present a unique version of this seasonal favourite in a new creative and imaginative way.”

Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch Musical! is slated for release December 9 on NBC. While it might not reach Aussie screens, I’m sure clips of it will pop up on Twitter at some point. Or TikTok, probably TikTok.

If, for whatever reason, you suddenly feel like watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas now, you can find that film on both Netflix and Stan.
