Remember when two IG personalities feuded over naming their babies Baby? Because I can’t stop thinking about it.
The Baby beef (sorry) kicked off after Aussie model and founder of Luma Beauty, Jessica Hart, named her newborn daughter Baby. She shares the munchkin with her longtime partner, NASCAR driver James Kirkham.
“Baby is everything I ever imagined and so much more,” Jessica shared in an Instagram post. “Thank you for choosing us to be your parents, Baby. I promise we won’t let you down.”
This was very sweet and all, but it apparently pissed off her close mate Sasha Benz, who named her kid Baybi (Blue Benz) almost three years ago. I mean, I assume Baybi is pronounced like baby, despite the different spelling.
Sasha, the founder of luxury vintage label Wyld Blue, was extremely unamused.
“Sasha was devastated that her close friend would copy her daughter’s ‘unique’ name, especially after she’d gone to her for name ideas,” a mutual friend told The Sydney Morning Herald on Sunday.
According to the mate, Jessica gave Sasha a week’s notice that she was naming her baby Baby, adding that Sasha shouldn’t worry because “it’s spelt differently.”
And that was that. A week later, Jessica gave birth to Baby-Rae Kirkham – the Rae is a nod to Jessica’s mum. They just call her Baby, though.
But wait, it doesn’t end there.
Speaking exclusively to People on December 28 2020, Jessica explained that she had first heard the name Baby in the movie Dirty Dancing. Well, that’s her story anyway, so make of that what you will.
“[I] always thought I’d love to name my daughter Baby,” she said.
Through a source, Jessica vehemently denied that she “copied” Sasha’s baby name. The source – grain of salt – told the Daily Mail: “It has always been on her list of names before she even knew Sasha and her baby.”
I don’t know when Jessica and Sasha met, but that kind of sounds like the pair became friends after Baybi was born.
After Baby was born, Jessica and Sasha stopped talking. The Baby / Baybi beef had caused a rift.
But, it appears Jessica and Sasha have been able to put aside their differences – or, well, similarities – because they’ve apparently mended their friendship.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Sasha didn’t directly address the rift, but she did share that she’s talking to Jessica again.
“Of course Jess and I are still friends,” she said. “We chatted it out a few weeks back, and I am happy she has a name she loves for her beautiful girl.”
“Baybi is almost three now and our new babies are only weeks apart, so it’s more important that they all grow up knowing there are more important things to care about, and both Jess and I agree on that.”
In October 2020, Sasha gave birth to her third kid, Haze Heart Benz. Jessica would give birth to Baby the following month.
What happens now? Who knows. I’m putting my money on annual passive aggressive birthday cards.
