One Thing The Golden Globes Got Right Was Nominating 3 Female Directors For The First Time Ever

I’ve spent all morning bitching about the batshit Golden Globes nominations but in the midst of all the rage that’s been summoned as a result of some of the mind-boggling choices made this year, there isn’t enough praise for something the Hollywood Foreign Press Association actually got right.

Three female directors have made history by scoring nominations for Best Director – the first time more than one has been shortlisted in a single year.

So who are these goal-kicking queens? None other than Regina King, Chloe Zhao and Emerald Fennell.

King helmed the epic Amazon project, One Night in Miami, which is a fictional recounting of an evening where Muhammad Ali, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke, and Jim Brown got together to discuss the Civil Rights Movement and the cultural shift in the 1960s.

It starred Kingsley Ben-Adir, Eli Goree and Aldis Hodge. Peep the epic trailer below:

Meanwhile Chloe Zhao is responsible for the critically acclaimed Nomadland, the 2020 Western drama starring Frances McDormand.

And finally, Emerald Fennell scored two nominations, one for Best Director and another for Best Screenplay for the powerful film, Promising Young Woman. So she directed the film, wrote it, and also stars in it. What a living legend.

Produced by Aussie Margot Robbie and starring Carey Mulligan, the dark comedy film has received critical acclaim and has been heralded as one of the most powerful flicks of our time.

There are five directors nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes this year, two of which are men – David Fincher (Mank / Netflix) and Aaron Sorokin (The Trial of the Chicago 7 / Netflix) – while the other three are the aforementioned icons, meaning women are rightfully dominating this important Golden Globes category for the first time EVER.

This is a historic win as the Golden Globes had previously only nominated five women in its 77-year history (what the FUCK took so long?).
