So The Golden Globes Will Just Hand Out Awards To Anyone Now?

My wacky body clock has been waking me up at 5:30am since Venus entered Aquarius, which is v. inconvenient bc it’s an hour before I’m actually supposed to get up. Ordinarily I’d do a quick sweep of the news, then go back to bed for another sweet hour of slumber. Alas this morning I could not, because I clocked the Golden Globes nominations and saw that Emily In fucking Paris had been nominated for a crazy amount of awards and seriously, how can you sleep peacefully in a world where a sappy series with detestable characters and a basic-ass storyline receives that many nominations? How? HOW?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association were really On One this year and awarded one of the most critically panned shows of 2020 with several awards. Not just one fluke nomination, it got SEVERAL nominations, including two major noms: one for Best Comedy, despite being completely devoid of humour, and another for Best Actress for Lily Collins’ portrayal of the annoying Emily who incapsulates everything that’s wrong with our generation, if ya ask me.

Ok, my next bone to pick: James Corden. Despite the fact that The Prom received a fuck-ton of backlash for casting Corden, a straight white man, as a queer character, Corden still took out a Golden Globes nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. DISGOOSTANG.

And look, I love me some Kate Hudson, in fact, I wanna be her when I’m older (and I wanna be Goldie Hawn when I’m even older than that), but considering how aggressively problematic her flick with Sia was (it’s called Music and it’s an ableist nightmare), it sure as shit did not warrant a single nomination, let alone two.

And while the low-points in entertainment last year are being unfairly praised, let’s not forget that some remarkable talent has been snubbed, and of course they’re all POC. Issa Rae, Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Major all failed to receive a single nomination, nor did dramedy Insecure cop the recognition that it so deserved.

Once again queen bee Sandra Oh was robbed of a nomination for her killer role in Killing Eve, as was my girl Zendaya who nailed it in Malcolm & Marie, which also received zero nominations.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association should hang their heads in shame. SHAAAAAME, I say.
