End Of Year Ratings Suggest Australians Still Love Unrealistic Reality Television

According to the latest batch of OzTam ratings, Australians are suffering from a critical shortage of functioning remotes with which to change the channel. Also, y’all are still crazy for shiny, unrealistic depictions of reality filtered through the lens of highly-doctored talent competitions – or Hair Journeys – wherein contestants are judged on their ability to quenelle an apartment, sing The Charleston and spin their chairs for teen-voted Tweets about Donna Hay or something. ¯_(-_-)_/¯
Of the top fifty most-watched regular programs, shows like The Block: Sky HighThe X-FactorMy Kitchen Rules and The Voice dominated the ratings, with the latter of the four claiming the honorific of the most-watched program of the year with a Finale audience of 2,071,000. The silver lining from all this reality drudgery? Only four of the most watched programs were imports (Downton Abbey, The Blacklist, Revenge and New Tricks) and 2.7 million viewers watched the AFL Grand Final. Additionally, just making it into the top half of the most-watched list is The News; however, it’s Channel Seven news, which is really just a cross-promotional pre-cursor to My Kitchen Rules, so…
Of the major commercial broadcasters, Seven also leads the way with an audience share of 22.90%, followed closely by 20.90% for Nine. The ABC? 13.50% for you, ABC. You go, ABC! And none for Channel Ten, bye.
