Netflix has announced the cancelation of its Daredevil series after three seasons, ending what was once the cornerstone element of its Marvel universe.

In a statement obtained by Variety, a Netflix spokesperson said the Charlie Cox-led series will not return to the streaming platform for a fourth instalment.
“We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note,” the statement said.
Daredevil, which first hit Netflix in 2015, was the first of the platform’s series based on a Marvel superhero. Fans latched on to the story of blind lawyer Matt Murdock, who fought crime as the titular hero by night. Companion series Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher followed.
Of those shows, only Jessica Jones and The Punisher remain on Netflix’s slate (there are no current plans to renew The Defenders, the miniseries which features many of the aforementioned heroes, for a second season).
Variety notes the decision not to move ahead with more Daredevil comes as Disney, which owns Marvel Entertainment, prepares to launch its own streaming service. It stands to reason they’d make full use of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the prospect of introducing their own totally in-house takes on Daredevil, even if it does piss off fans of the Netflix series.

In the statement, Netflix assured viewers they will be able to catch up on Daredevil and other Marvel shows for a long time to come – there just won’t be any more in the foreseeable future.
