The band previously issued the following statement via Instagram:

We are really upset, confused and disappointed by Marshmello’s choice to work with Tyga and Chris Brown.

We like and respect Mello as a person but working with people who are predators and abusers enables, excuses and ultimately tacitly endorses that behaviour. That is not something we can or will stand behind.

Following their post, Brown left an abusive comment on an unrelated photo that the band shared.

“BUNCH OF LOSERS,” he began. “These are the type of people I wish walked in front of a speeding bus full of mental patients.”

“Keep groveling over your own insecurities and hatred. IM BLACK AND PROUD. AND I KNOW IT HURTS THAT U GUYS ARE STRUGGLING WIT LIFE OR PEACE SO U ARE FORCED TO SEE MY SUCCESS.”

“You aren’t even #2, ( REMEMBER 2nd place only means YOU LOST FIRST! TA-TA. GOODDAY PEASANTS.”

Following the online altercation, the band started receiving loads of angry comments on Instagram, forcing them to disable commenting altogether.

During their performance at the Fortress Festival in Texas on Saturday night, lead singer Lauren Mayberry stood by the band’s statement and revealed that they’ve been receiving death threats from Chris Brown fans.

“We weren’t picking on Chris Brown for the sake of picking on Chris Brown. It was a morally dubious decision that happened.”

In 2009, Brown pleaded guilty to felony assault for beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna and was sentenced to five years of probation and six months of community service.
