Given that Rodarte’s ever-nostalgic designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy have a track record of taking their collections’ cues from cinema (Days of Heaven, Black Swan), lining their runways with exposed fluorescent tubes evoking light sabres, rampant fantasy influences (Dungeons & Dragons) as well as the oeuvre and physical presence of George Lucas, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that the sisters closed their Fall 2014 NYFW show with five silk charmeuse gowns printed with iconic Star Wars imagery.
With respect – fun though they are in their unabashed, kitsch costume appeal – the inclusion of Star Wars finale evening wear felt more like a deft ploy for Instagram momentum than anything else in an otherwise jarring collection closer in its resemblance to a Rookie reader’s DIY bricolage mood-board of sentimental textiles (glo-mesh sequins, buffalo plaid, Coogi Sweater embroidery) than a unified whole. I wouldn’t hate it if Elle Fanning wanted to wear the C3PO one though.
As a PR stunt? The force is strong with these two, always.
