George Lucas Sells Lucasfilm To Disney, New Star Wars Film Due In 2015

Bought Lucasfilm, Disney did. -Yoda, 2012

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away This morning, mass media corporation and film conglomerate Walt Disney confirmed their takeover of Lucasfilm, the once-groundbreaking studio headed by Mr Star Wars himself, George Lucas. As if that wasn’t shocking enough, Disney have also announced their intention to create more Star Wars films (note: plural), the first of which will be released in 2015. What exactly is left to be told is unknown, however, judging by the cool $4 billion paid for Lucasfilm, Disney must have an other-worldy faith in the future of the franchise.

Although George Lucas won’t be writing or directing the three or more films slated for release every 2-3 years, he will act as a creative consultant which is basically just a fancy job title for the guy who keeps Chewbacca from becoming too much like Cinderella. He defended his decision to sell out as a transitional move which would allow Star Wars to live long beyond his own lifetime. And let’s be honest, things were only going to go downhill after his decision to release a Star Wars themed Angry Birds game earlier this month.

Good move, Disney. Because whether or not anyone really wants new Star Wars films, it’s safe to say that people will flock to see anything Star Wars-related, making the corporation lots of money regardless of how spectacularly awful the films may actually be. The Clone Wars, anyone?

This guys knows what we’re talking about.
