Cate Blanchett Wins Best Actress Oscar For ‘Blue Jasmine’, Gives Shout Out To Sydney Theatre Company

Nailed it. Best Actress lock Cate Blanchett has won the Oscar for her unflinchingly brutal, Stoli-soaked performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, telling her fellow assembled Tens:

“As random and as subjective as this awards is, it means a great deal in a year of extraordinary performances by women…. Julia [Roberts] Hashtag Suck It, do you know what I mean?…

I’m here accepting an award in an extraordinary screenplay by Woody Allen; thank you so much Woody for casting me. And perhaps to those in the film industry still clinging to the idea that films starring women are niche. They are not. Female films are not niche experiences. Audiences want to see them and they make money! The world is round people!”
Blanchett, whose work in Blue Jasmine was largely informed by her incredible performance in the STC production of Tennessee Williams’s A Streetcar Named Desire, concluded by saying, “Finally I would like to thank every single member of the Sydney Theatre Company. Blue Jasmine was the real synthesis of my work there in theatre and now in film. It has made me a better actress.
There is so much talent in Australia, and tonight, [American Hustle costume designer] Michael Wilkinson, CM and I – it’s just the tip of the iceberg!”
