Actress Brie Larson has called off her engagement to musician Alex Greenwald, her fiance of nearly three years, People magazine reports.

A source close to the couple told the publication: “They have taken a step back from their engagement for the time being but they remain close.”

The pair got engaged in May of 2016, but had been dating for a number of years before that. They largely kept their relationship out of the public eye.

Brie Larson had previously spoken glowingly of her fiance, telling Entertainment Tonight:

“He’s the other half of the equation – how can you explain support? I mean, it goes beyond anything. He’s just my person, he’s my best friend.”

Greenwald is a model and actor, but is best known as the lead singer of Phantom Planet, whose hit song ‘California‘ served as the theme music for The OC for four seasons.

The band, which also featured actor Jason Schwartzman as its drummer, went on hiatus in 2008, while Greenwald has gone on to work with the group Phases, and release solo material.

He was supportive of his fiancee’s acting career, and posted a photo of himself in a Captain Marvel cap to Instagram when the movie wrapped shooting in July of last year.

That film will be out later this year, and Brie Larson will also be seen in Avengers: Endgame, although the size and scope of her role in that remain a mystery.
