Despite a last minute surge of support for The Muppets, hosting responsibility for the 2012 Academy Awards ceremony has been allocated to reliable old hand, Billy Crystal.
Crystal, who has hosted the Awards eight times, confirmed the gig after tweeting: “Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.”
And so are we. In recent years no other host has come close to topping Crystal’s song-and-dance opening numbers in which he introduces the Best Picture nominees by slicing LOL footage of himself into the movies’ most memorable scenes, and sings about each through reworked classic show tunes. But then, deep down I am a gay man stereotype so that is my idea of entertainment heaven.
