Really, the only thing surprising about any of this is that it took this long for Kevin Hart to score the gig of hosting the Oscars ceremony.
The ever-present comedian has confirmed he will be hosting the 91st Academy Awards ceremony in February next year, ending speculation about his involvement in the ceremony and a surge of curious head-scratching over why the ceremony has made it to December without announcing a host.
Hart took to Instagram a short while ago to confirm his involvement in the show, calling it the “opportunity of a lifetime.”
For years I have been asked if I would ever host the Oscars and my answer was always the same… I said that it would be the opportunity of a lifetime for me as a comedian and that it will happen when it’s suppose (sic) to.
I am so happy to say that the day finally come for me to host the Oscars. I am blown away simply because this has been a goal on my list for a long time… To be able to join the legendary list of hosts that have graced that stage is unbelievable. I know my Mom is smiling from ear to ear right now.
I want to thank my family/friends/fans for supporting me and riding with me all this time… I will be sure to make this year’s Oscars a special one.
I appreciate The Academy for the opportunity. Now it’s time to rise to the occasion.
Overnight there had been some consternation over why next year’s ceremony had yet to select a host; an issue explored by The Hollywood Reporter who labelled the gig “the least-wanted job in town,” owing largely to the Academy’s desire for conservative performances, which severely hems in what hosts can do on-stage and leaves them open to rampant criticism.
While Hart’s involvement in the show answers the big, lingering question of who will host the ceremony, whether or not producers adjust the show’s tone and format – which has been shedding viewers in absurd numbers in recent years – remains wide open.
And who knows, if Hart proves to be unable to revive the show in its current format, maybe at that point it’s time producers did the right thing and make the damned call.
Charmed, they’re sure.
