It’s so easy to fall into a common rut when you’re trying to work out what to do with your life. While there’s nothing wrong with following job trends if that’s where your passions lie, it’s worth researching outside the box to discover what else could be out there and expand your list of career ideas.

This is one of those jobs, whether you’re in corporate sales or a more retail setup, that tends to rely more on real-world experience and working your way up through the ranks than degrees.

So you can basically get to Executive level without any formal qualifications, however expanding your knowledge base never hurts. If you plan on getting into a specialised or technical area of sales your need for further study may become necessary. Does that mean uni? Not necessarily, there are plenty of options not involving an ATAR.

3. Ethical Hacker

Great job title right? This is a role that is fairly new and will continue to grow as a field in the future. They’re basically anti-hackers, making the web more secure and protected from illegal hackers. This field is hired by every from big companies to government agencies to security firms and more all over the world (hello travel possibilities).

4. Real Estate Agent

Love you some hot property? This once popular career choice seems to have fallen off the radar as of late, but if sales and houses are your jam, time to start considering it again. You’ll need to earn a license, but you don’t need a degree. Once you’re ready to go, hello average annual salary of $93,051, according to Indeed.

5. Digital/Graphic Designer

Dare I say, these are the artists of the digital world? Except for digital artists. At any rate, if your fave type of communication is visual, get amongst it. I don’t think people really how many different options there are for Graphic Designers. You can work across print and electronic media from mags to books, or on a more marketing basis by designing images for businesses from logos to advertising. You could end up working in film, for corporations, freelance, and so much more.

You KNOW you want to, or at least seriously considered it at some point in your life. Some pilots do have a degree in Aircraft Operations but there’s plenty of paths to becoming a pilot that don’t involve an ATAR, like cadetship programs, private training.

A super important career, but rarely talked about for some reason. In a nutshell, you’ll asses risk and develop/enforce safer practices inside and outside. You’re basically helping human and environmental health, which is damn worthwhile. A bunch of environmental management degrees, diplomas and certificates will get you there, depending on what pathway suits you best.

8. Entrepreneur

We’re a generation who thirst for being our own bosses, and why the heck not? After all, Dick Smith, Richard Branson, and Steve Jobs all managed it without university degrees, just some sense and some very good ideas. If you want to give yourself a leg up and a good business knowledge to get started, there are plenty of institutions where you can complete a Diploma in Business or Bachelor of Business.

Make-up professionals are becoming more and more recognised for the artists they are, particularly once they start moving into the special effects and movie type areas. Being a very hands-on profession, you’ll want to get into some hands-on courses for practical experience. You’ll find plenty of certificates and diplomas that even let you specialise into a specific area too. A bonus is how much this profession lends itself to a bit of freelance and entrepreneurship too.

10. Aerospace Engineering & Operations Technician

Duuuude, this is cool. Engineering, in general, seems to be on the rise as a career choice. But with so many areas you can go into, not many people are considering this one. You’ll oversee the design, building, and maintenance of all flying vehicles, from planes to missiles, so spacecraft to satellites.

11. Web Developer

Computer/web-based jobs are only going to keep increasing. You don’t really need any formal qualifications as this is a very hands-on type of career, and you’ll probably get some training on the job, but a qualification can help you get leg up on the competition. There are plenty of different VET courses and subjects to help broaden your knowledge without an ATAR.
