How To Mix Up Your Personal Style Without Freaking Yourself Out

Every so often, we all get a bit bored of our look. Whether you’ve fallen into the trap of jeans 24/7 – I own 10 pairs and frankly, I’m ashamed – or you’ve been doing a really specific vibe for years, to the point where everyone knows you’ll absolutely wear a floral Realisation Par dress and black slides to any/all parties. Either way, you’re in a fashion rut – but it’s not as hard as you’d think to get out.

MAKE A MOOD BOARD

Before you start throwing cash at any brand, it’s worth making a mood board or even just saving pics on Instagram that reflect the style you’re going for. Stylists do this all the time for themed shoots, so it makes sense to do it when you’re considering completely flipping your wardrobe on it’s head – it means you’ll go into your new vibe with a really clear idea about what you want to be investing in, and how it’s all going to pull together day to day.

RESEARCH BEFORE YOU GET STARTED

Gathering primo intel is mandatory before you change your look. Follow influencers on Instagram that consistently rep the style you want to sport, so you have plenty of outfit ideas – they’re also great sources for new places to shop. For example, Zanita Whittington and Chloe Hill are great if you’re trying to inject more colour and eclectic vibes into your wardrobe, Talisa Sutton and Kaity Modern kill it when it comes to minimalism, and Jeanne Damas or Camille Charriere are perfect for inspirational French-girl looks.

Also – fill your online shopping wish lists with items that align with your new style, but don’t buy anything just yet – you’ll rack up a solid list of items you can buy, then decide which seem like good investments and which need to be deleted.

START CHEAP FOR TREND-BASED PIECES

If you’re fantasising about turning into some sort of forest-nymph-commune-dweller (think peasant dresses and furry coats) don’t go dropping a grand on your new wardrobe just yet. A lot of the time we fantasise about this new, great life with our fresh threads – only to get over the entire look within a few months.

Instead, test the waters with some more affordable items in line with your new style. Then, if you love it, start looking at the heftier price tags.

INVEST IN ITEMS THAT FIT ANY STYLE

Wherever you can, buy pieces that can be reworked back into your existing wardrobe in case your style foray goes south. Not to say it will – but just in case, you’ll never regret your buys. The Swarovski Remix Collection (seen here on Karlie Kloss) is completely designed to be re-workable – the different strands can be joined together to make longer necklaces or wraps, or worn alone.

GRADUALLY EVOLVE

Not that it matters what anyone thinks, but it can be quite jarring for your own self to completely switch looks overnight. You’ll be getting a lot of comments and attention, so if you’re not a fan of that the best plan of action is to morph gradually from your current vibe to the one you’re aspiring to. If you want to go minimalist, start by paring back on the jewellery front, then work in some plain tees and cami’s, and finally ditch the jeans for monochrome jumpsuits and slip dresses. It’s a nice way to ease your mind into embracing your new look.
