As far as retirements go, Stephen Soderbergh‘s has been mercifully brief.
The ‘Ocean’s Eleven/Twelve/Thirteen,’ ‘Magic Mike,’ and ‘Sex, Lies, and Videotape‘ director put the cue in the rack as far as directing feature films was concerned back in 2013, following the release of the reasonably underrated ‘Side Effects,’ and for a while he looked like sticking to his word.
Though in the handful of years since Soderbergh has still had steady work – largely on TV or as a cinematographer under his pseudonym Peter Andrews, or editor under his other pseudonym Mary Ann Bernard – on the film front he remained quiet.
‘Course all it took to coax him out of his brief flirtation with a life on the directorial pasture was Channing Tatum, a one-armed Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig putting on the most unbelievable southern US accent heard this side of the Mason-Dixon.
‘Logan Lucky‘ dropped its debut trailer earlier today, and be damned if it doesn’t look like an utterly outrageous romp.
Tatum and Driver star as the slightly dim-witted Jimmy and Clyde Logan (the latter of whom has precisely one arm) who, along with sister Millie (played by the extremely good Riley Keough aka Elvis Presley‘s granddaughter) who attempt to reverse a family curse by staging a heist on the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race in North Carolina, enlisting the help of ex-con Joe Bang (Craig) along the way.
The stacked ensemble cast also features Katie Holmes, Seth MacFarlane, Hillary Swank, Katherine Waterston, and Sebastian Stan.
Sweet lord it looks like ‘Ocean’s Eleven‘-meets-‘Talladega Nights‘-meets-‘Snatch‘ and I am severely into it.
The film is set to find its way into cinemas from August 18th.
