At Least 1 Dead & 70 Taken Hostage After Gunman Storms Monk Retirement Home

At least one woman has died and more than 70 people have been taken hostage after an armed gunman stormed a retirement home for monks in Montpellier, France.

Reuters reports that the gunman entered the building around 9:45pm local time, and is believed to still inside.

Witnesses say the man was wearing a hoodie and carrying a gun. A source told Reuters that there was “no indication” the attack was linked to terrorism.

According to reports, the supervisor at the retirement home was able to issue an alert before he was fatally stabbed.

A police operation is underway. We’ll continue to update this story as details emerge.

16 monks have been rescued, while a further 44 are still being held hostage.
