Updating: What We Know From The Martin Place Hostage Situation

UPDATE 6:00pm – Prime Minister Tony Abbott is addressing the media for the second time today in a brief statement that eschewed mention of any particular details.
“This is a very disturbing incident. It is profoundly shocking that innocent people should be held hostage by an armed person claiming political motivation. Nevertheless, I can say that NSW Police and other agencies have responded to this incident with great professionalism. Throughout the day, there has been nothing but complete and total cooperation between different governments and different agencies.”

“You can be proud of the way your police and security bodies have responded to the events of this day.”

“Yes, it has been a difficult day. Yes, it is a day which has tested us, but so far, like Australians in all sorts of situations, we have risen to the challenge.”

UPDATE 5:50pm – Channel 10 are the third outlet reporting that they’ve also had contact with hostages inside the café who have relayed the hostage taker’s demands, which have been redacted in accordance with the wishes of the NSW Police Force. There’s also this: one of the male hostages has also been taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital and is in a satisfactory condition:

UPDATE 5:15pm – Here’s the latest from the NSW Police.

UPDATE 5:00pm – Two more hostages – female Lindt Café employees – have reportedly escaped, bringing the count to five.

UPDATE: 4:40pm  – New South Wales deputy police commissioner Catherine Burn has confirmed that police made contact with the hostage taker in the last two hours. The Sydney Morning Herald are reporting that NSW Police have activated Task Force Pioneer, which means the situation is now being treated as a terrorist attack:
“Police negotiators have had contact and they continue to have contact and we will work through this as we do with our negotiators. It might take a bit of time, but we want to resolve this peacefully and I assure you if it takes a bit of time we will take that time.”
Nine News have also had contact with two hostages via phone; their calls have been passed onto police and their families.

UPDATE 3:43pm – Reports are emerging that as many as three people have emerged from the Lindt cafe.
Live news pictures confirm three people have left the building. It is not yet known if they escaped, or were released.

EARLIER: Both Prime Minister Tony Abbott and NSW Premier Mike Baird have already this morning released statements addressing the ongoing police situation in Martin Place
Other than that, concrete information concerning the hostage siege at the Lindt Café in Sydney’s CBD is – for want of a better word – sparse. There is one known gunman and an unconfirmed number of hostages. At least four have been sighted in the windows. While the Sydney Opera House has been evacuated, airspace over Sydney – and the airport – remains open. The flag seen in the window of the cafe is not the Islamic State flag, it is a black flag with white Arabic writing reading “There is no God but Allah” and “Mohammed is the messenger of God”.
This is not being treated as a terrorist situation. All we know is that it’s an abhorrent crime.

Here’s what we do know by means of official statements delivered by key political figures, the Australian Federal and State Police. This post will update throughout the day as more information comes to light.
Here’s Tony Abbott’s statement.
Here’s Mike Baird’s statement.
Here’s a statement from The NSW Police.
Here’s Bill Shorten’s statement.

UPDATE: The Guardian are reporting that 2GB presenter Ray Hadley says he has spoken to a hostage and that the hostage takers want to talk to Tony Abbott live on air. The PM will be giving a press conference at 12:30pm.

UPDATE: An arrest reportedly occurred 200m from the Lindt Cafe.

UPDATE: Tony Abbott is addressing the media live from Parliament House in Canberra. He did not take any questions after the conference.
“We have to appreciate that even in a society such as ours, there are people who would wish to do us harm. That’s why we have police and security organisations of the utmost professionalism that are ready and able to respond to a whole range of situations and contingencies including this situation that we are now seeing in Sydney.

The whole point of politically motivated violence is to scare people out of being themselves. Australia is a peaceful, open, and generous society. Nothing should ever change that and that’s why I would urge all Australians today to go about their business as usual.

Of course, if anyone does have any suspicions untoward activity, there is the national security hotline, 1800, 123, 400 which I would urge them to call. This is a very disturbing incident. I can understand the concerns and anxieties of the Australian people at a time like this but our thoughts and prayers must above all go out to the individuals who are caught up in this. I can think of almost nothing more distressing, more terrifying than to be caught up in such a situation and our hearts go out to these people.”

The White House has also confirmed President Barack Obama has been briefed by his head counter-terrorism adviser Lisa Monaco; New Zealand and Canada’s heads of state have also been in touch with Tony Abbott regarding the Martin Place situation.
NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione and Mike Baird will hold a joint press conference 2:00pm.

UPDATE: Baird and Scipione have just addressed the media, and are reluctant to label this a terrorist situation as the motive remains unclear. They have not established contact with the hostage taker. Their statements read as follows, respectively:
“We are being tested today in Sydney. The police are being tested, the public is being tested, but whatever the test we will face it head on and we will remain a strong democratic, civil society.  I have full confidence in the Police Commissioner and the incredible work of the NSW police force. They are on top of the situation and they are doing everything possible that needs to be done. We are incredibly lucky to have them at our disposal looking after the public in this State.”
Scipione followed Baird’s comments, saying:
“This is a difficult day for everyone that is involved in this particular operation. I can confirm for you that we have an armed defender in premises holding an undisclosed number of hostages in the city. We are at this stage continuing to secure and make sure that we are doing all we can to bring this to a peaceful outcome. We want to matter resolved peacefully and we will do all we need to do to ensure that. We certainly have tight restriction and tight controls around that location and we will work as long as we need to to bring this to an outcome. The officers there are train and professional. They know what they’re doing and they have trained for.”
“We haven’t had contact with the armed offender at this stage… There’s at least one. There are hundreds of officers involved in that very small tight location right now. But again if need be we will escalate that and if need be we’ll take it out to many many more. We still determining what it is that may well be the motivation. We are not in a position to determine where the individual is from.”
In the following question session, Baird was asked if the incident will affect the way people view life in Sydney, to which he replied:
“No, it won’t and no it shouldn’t. We are incredibly proud of this city. The values we hold dear and we will continue at every day to protect them. Yes we are being tested today…I am very confident and thankful for the police and their activities and what they’ve done both in the lead-up, what I’ve seen today. We’re incredibly lucky to have them.”

UPDATE: The Guardian are reporting that police have left the Sydney Opera House and that certain staff are being allowed back in. These photos are just in from Getty’s wire service:

We are deeply concerned over this serious incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the staff and customers involved and all their friends and families. The matter is being dealt with by the authorities and we are waiting for any updates from them.”
