It’s certainly a bad day for those of you hell-bent on hiding from the horrible truth: Sydney sucks, folks. It’s indisputable now. In fact the New South Wales capital blows so hard that it’s been officially ranking 10th last on a new list of the World’s Best Cities. You’d drink to try and forget that fact but half yr damned bars are closed, so…
Time Out has released its annual Time Out Index, ranking 48 global cities on a scale based on responses from over 30,000 people.
Sydney could only manage 39th place overall.
39th.
Out of 48.
Oh boy.

The index surveys people who live in each of the 48 cities as well as local experts, all of whom rate their town on a variety of different factors including happiness, attractiveness, progress, food and drink culture, live music, nightlife, and sociability.
Unsurprisingly enough, Sydneysiders staggeringly low opinion of themselves in those last few categories – beaten down by years of increasingly stifling lockout laws – had a very negative affect on Sydney’s overall rating. Hence the 39th position overall.
That spot was enough for Sydney to rate higher than a mere handful of cities that includes Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong, Boston, Rio de Janeiro, Marseille, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, and Istanbul.
On the rather extensive list of cities that kicked Sydney’s ass, however? Moscow, Delhi, Tel Aviv, Birmingham in England and 9 – count ’em – NINE cities in the United States.
New York topped the overall list, closely and smugly followed by Melbourne in 2nd place. Melbourne and Sydney were the only two Australian cities to feature on the list, which you can smash into your faces in full below:
