If you’re super obsessed with Netflix‘s ‘Narcos‘ and have always wanted to act out the quietly menacing role of drug cartel overlord Pablo Escobar, well now you can spend some quality time in one of his various abandoned mansions.
The kingpin’s slice of literal Mexican heaven is in Tulum, and was left to be overgrown after his death in a shootout in 1993. Nearly 20 years after his demise, the estate was bought by art dealer Lio Malca, who transformed the space into a chic as hell boutique hotel.
Casa Malca is the name of the restored mansion – it’s right on one of the biggest beaches in Tulum, has 40 extremely luxe rooms and three swimming pools, if sand’s not your kinda thing.
Oh, and this is one of the pools. I don’t even know how this is a thing but all I know is that I need to be in it.
The interiors are bright and bold, drawing inspiration from Mayan design, and boasts some very good-looking exposed wood features.
One of the bars in Casa Malca is a mind-bending nod to Keith Haring, which tbh would look pretty fuckin’ wild after a few tequila sunrises.
The whole place is full of amazing art from Lio’s collection, with pieces from Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and on rotation in the private rooms.
A night at Casa Malca will set you back a solid $577 for a couple, so maybe if you can’t ever afford a house, save up for a sabbatical at this place instead.
