Okay, Telstra is pretty good at this whole “reception” thing, but it’s also pretty good at sticking huge price tags on things. If you’re looking to live the life of connection luxury without the big hit to your wallet, then maybe it’s time to try Belong instead.

Belong is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that utilises the Telstra network. Well, most of it. The full Telstra network covers 99.4% of the Aussie population, while Belong covers 98.8%. That’s a pretty solid High Distinction no matter how you look at it.

Belong offers three SIM-only plans with unlimited talk and text, the only difference being your data allowance. You bolt on international talk and text to over 30 destinations for another $5 per month on Belong’s cheapest two plans, but that’s included as standard on the $40 plan.

To put that into perspective, Telstra charges $50 for 15GB and $60 for 60GB.

“But I neeeeeed the 60GB” – quiet, no you don’t. If you check your mobile data usage, I bet you would struggle to pound through 60GB in a month. I never connect to WiFi, constantly stream and hotspot and I’ve never cracked the 40GB mark. Go on and check, I’ll wait.

Was I right? Great – here’s your new plan.

Better yet, you can bank all your extra data. You know all the extra data that you won’t use, well it doesn’t just disappear at the end of the month. Every month your extra gigs get squirrelled away for you to use, so if you think I lost that bet – check again.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s take a look at what that coverage difference actually means. Only 0.6% of the Aussie population won’t be covered by the telco when compared with Telstra. Unless you’re remote AF, Belong has got chu boo.
