Friends, it’s time to farewell a good pal. A pal that was there for us in our youth and weirdly hung around our grandparents when we felt the need to move on. It’s time to lay the decrepit 2G network to rest.
Yes folks, Telstra are shutting off the ancient network for good on December 1, 2016 as we move on to greener pastures. Let us not mourn the loss, and rather remember the joys and monophonic ringtones it so graciously brought to our lives.
Please try to remain strong as you tell nan and pop the bad news and guide them thoughtfully through the grieving process, then into the JB Hi-Fi catalogue to pick out a new phone that is both practical and easy to use. The one with the big buttons, please.
Any phones from the last 15 years should support the 3G network, but if you’re unsure, you can always pop into a Telstra store to find out for sure. It’s important to make alternate arrangements, as older phones will not be able to make or receive phone calls, which is pretty important if you have an older relative using an old phone.
You’ll still be able to make emergency calls if you’re in range of another provider’s 2G network, but it won’t be long until they’re shut down as well. Optus will be ceasing 2G in April 2017 and Vodafone in September 2017.
So pour some out for the 2G network. May it rest in peace.
