Steam’s Gonna Let You Stream Your Entire Game Library On Your Phone

PC gaming marketplace Steam announced a new feature that’ll let you stream its library of games to your mobile phone today. All of your games will playable on a goddamn smartphone.

The service will be completely free via an app called Steam Link, which is due for release the week of May 21. Like the Steam Link device that allows game streaming to your TV, the app will allow the same suite of games to stream on your phone, providing your computer is connected to a 5Ghz network or plugged in via ethernet.

In other words, your phone won’t actually be running the games, it’ll simply be a window into your computer, allowing you to play wherever you want within your local network’s reach.

But here’s the thing – you’ll probably need some kind of controller for this to work like you would with the Steam Link device, as most games probably won’t have support for touch controls.

The biggest difficulty with game streaming like this is latency, particularly when it comes to the quality of internet we have here in Australia. By the sounds of it, the Steam Link app will rely more on your local connection, which should alleviate some of the stress, but as always, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Streaming games to your phone in bed on a hungover Saturday morning sure sounds great though.
