When Twitter announced it’d be shutting down Vine earlier this year to save costs, it didn’t just signal a loss for lulzy 6-second-long videos.
A legitimate culture formed around the platform and its micro-comedy format, and much has been written about how the app provided a unique way for commentary and humour that mightn’t have flourished elsewhere.
A new announcement from the app’s team changes things, though. And it changes things in a way that might just make Vine as potent as it’s ever been.
In a blog post published earlier today, Vine let users know that the format isn’t actually dying – it’s merely changing shape. From January, the video-capturing functionality will simply be revamped as Vine Camera.
While the social media aspect of Vine will come to an end, Vine Camera will allow users to post their clips directly to Twitter. And, if we’re being honest here, most of y’all would have clocked your fav memes from the Twoots anyway.
To smooth over the transition, Vine as it currently exists will soon implement an option allowing your fans to start following you on Twitter. With any luck, the idiosyncratic community that Vine fostered will survive the leap to that more mainstream platform.
Users will also be able to download their Vines straight to their phones, which is perfect for all of those times you just feel like chuckling to yourself. Win / Win, as far as we’re concerned.
Vine signed off by thanking users for “the culture that you have helped shape, and for the content you’ll continue to make everywhere.
