What Goes Around, Comes Around; 6 Fashion Trends That Just Keep Giving

Made in association with our mates at New Balance (Y)

We are all very, very aware that fashion trends are cyclical. They’re always coming, and always leaving; forever going ‘Full Cyrcle’. It’s pretty damn likely that you could see an old photo of your mum, dad or even a grandparent wearing nearly the exact same outfit you are wearing right now. As innovative and creative as we all are with our personal styling, it’s usually still referencing the past. And that’s quite poetic, don’t you think? Fuck yeah, it is.
Here’s some examples of trends we’re presently frothin’ on, that have definitely happened in a previous decade or two, or three, or four:
~ New Balance’s ~
New Balance‘s have had a great lineup of celeb fans. In every decade, there’s been at least one outstanding musical icon who was an unofficial spokesperson for them. Raekwon in the 90s, Rihanna today – they’re doing good. The classic NB 500 transcends time, so cyclical nature of fashion barely even applies, ja feel? Chuck them on with a fur coat, or with a skirt and metallic accessories (cheers, RiRi), and it’ll somehow pull together. Also, you’ll be comfy AF.

Let’s be honest – we may already have absolutely horrific memories of wearing skin tight flared jeans in our much younger years – the noughties were a very strange time for fashion. But ten years on, flares are already repeating history (and we were terrified when we found out, tbh.) They were obviously universally faved in the 1970s, and today, style mavens such as Elin Kling and Australia’s own Tash Sefton are making flares look uber chic again. It’s understandable if you’re a little nervy about accidentally making those expensive chic flares look like a 2001 denim mistake; but at least we have those wonderfully fashion-forward ladies to guide us in the right direction.
~ Chokers ~
If you use Instagram or Tumblr (so all of you, probably), you’ve more than likely noticed a saturation of ladies wearing necklaces high around their throat, rather than on their chest. These can span from the a thin piece of leather with a long witchy-looking crystal dangling off of it, to a huge OTT gold thing (like Kylie Jenner’s in the above image). No matter which way you go, all of the above reference the delightfully pop culture-driven 1990s – women were going the exact opposite of the long chains that dominated the 80s. For inspo (or just to revel in some 90’s cult classics), watch films such as ‘Leon The Professional‘ and ‘The Craft’ as much as humanly possible.

The term ‘turtleneck’ is the absolute blurst and sounds a bit gross, but whatever – they are completely wonderful, and have been trending for a while with no sign of slowing down. Turtleneck jumpers and sweater tops were a real sign of the 1960s, and we are totally ~sorry not sorry~ for readopting. They’re functional, warm, can go from daywear to nightwear with ease, and they also somehow make outfits look at least 10x classier. Take Aussie blogger royalty Micah Gianneli for example – the ‘Who Wore it Better’ between her and 60s supermodel Twiggy is actually really, really difficult. And everyone knows Twiggy is a total QUEEN, so that’s a huge compliment.
~ Mum Jeans ~
Daaaamn, we are loving on the 90s at the moment. Have you noticed that the jeans you used to make fun of your mum for wearing, are now slowly and subtly creeping back into our wardrobes? We sure as hell have. They’re those faded blue jeans that are high waisted, slightly stuff and uncomfortable, but not skin tight. Cuff ’em at the bottom if you’re struggling to find a slim leg pair in the op shop – sometimes the perfect fit can be hard to find when you’re rifling through the denim bin at Salvo’s. Our mums had it so bloody easy, gaddamn it.
~ Gothica ~
Siouxsie Sioux (pron: Susie Soo) of Sioxsie Sioux & The Banshees had some serious style influence in the 80s. Her completely ‘black everything, with red wine lips’ vibe made an impact on multiple generations. To get on board with Sioux’s #sexygoth look, we’d advise looking at Alexander Wang‘s Fall 2015 collection. Add the following things to your shopping list, too: thigh high boots, stockings, bulk box of liquid eyeliner. However, we’d recommend not incorporating every single element at once unless you want to scare children (which Siouxsie definitely did).
