WA Election Called For Labor After Bloody Huge Swing Against Liberals

Although votes are still being counted, the ABC’s election analyst and all-around democracy boffin Antony Green has called the Western Australian state election in favour of Labor, after a mind-blowing overall voting swing away from the Liberal Party / Nationals coalition.

At time of writing, the swing is pegged at around 15% away from the Liberals, and friends, that’s ha-yuuuge.

According to Green, the wave of voters dropping their support for the LNP can be extrapolated upon, suggesting Labor will indeed gain the 10 extra seats required to gain power – and then some. At the mo’, they’re pegged to amass an extra 13.

If the results hold, it’ll mean that someone other than Colin Barnett – Mark McGowan, to be exact – will be Premier for the first time since late 2008.
All of this follows a pretty brutal election campaign, which saw the Liberals take the unprecedented step of offering Pauline Hanson’s One Nation a preference deal in order to shore up a few votes.

It turns out that may have been a bum deal for both parties; rusted-on Libs may have been turned off by One Nation’s patently batshit policies and candidates, and even Hanson herself said her party’s chances may have been tainted by the LNP’s iffy reputation in the state.

So miffed is One Nation, they’ve apparently barred the ABC from even entering their post-election shindig.

We’ll keep you updated on this one.
